Tiritiri Matangi

Located just 30km north east of central Auckland, Tiritiri Matangi Island is a bird and wildlife sanctuary, and one of New Zealand’s most important and exciting conservation projects. The island is home to some of the world’s rarest birds and reptiles, including the flightless takahe and tuatara. By eradicating mammals and pests from the island, endangered species such as the kiwi, kokako, stitchbird and brown teal have also been able to thrive.

Daily ferries mean that both school groups and daytrippers can explore and enjoy this wonderful environment. The future challenge for the island’s administration will be managing the balance between visitor numbers and safeguarding the magic of impeded wandering amidst birdsong and forest paths.

QBE is delighted to boast that we have supported this magical island paradise for the past 10 years. If you haven’t been to visit yet, we suggest you go and check out what you’ve been missing...
